Coal rank data is only reported in the years 2009 to 2013 and includes bituminous coal and metallurgical coal. This coal rank split is therefore applied to production back to 1956. Prior to this Consolidation Coal Company (CONSOL Energy antecedent) did not produce metallurgical coal and so all production is assumed to be bituminous.
